What are SPEED™ Braces?
SPEED™ Braces are discreet self-ligating, friction free brackets. Designed over 30 years ago, SPEED™ Braces remain the Gold Standard in self-ligating braces. As the name suggests, SPEED™ Braces allow your orthodontist to move your teeth efficiently, making treatment faster and often with fewer appointments. The SPEED system uses a unique bracket design and ‘Spring Clip’ technology to secure the wire into the bracket. Along with the specialised ‘Spring Clip’ technology, SPEED™ Braces have been designed approximately 1/3 smaller than conventional braces. SPEED™ Braces are a great choice if you’re looking for a more aesthetic, comfortable and faster treatment option.
• The unique self-ligating design allows the brackets to be up to 30% smaller than traditional metal brackets.
• SPEED™ has ‘Spring Clip’ technology and uses extremely light forces applied to teeth for friction-free efficient movement.
• Efficient treatment not only means faster but often fewer office visits, saving you valuable time.
• The light forces in combination with the small, smooth rounded bracket design minimizes soft tissue irritation.
• Shorter treatment times are associated with friction free brackets in particular SPEED™ braces.
– HOW DOES IT WORK? –
SPEED™ Braces have been designed with ‘Spring Clip’ technology. The ‘Spring Clip’ is made from a super elastic metal that closes gently on the wire, reducing pressure on your teeth and eliminating the need for bulky elastic or wire ties around each bracket.
The gentle forces applied by the ‘Spring Clip’ have the added benefit of allowing your teeth to move without friction, meaning that your teeth will move more efficiently and faster to their desired position. Conventional braces use coloured elastics or wire ties to hold the wire in the bracket.
While the elastics are easy to place they often lose their working power on the wire quite quickly or become discoloured, leading to a trip to your orthodontist. The wire ties are really strong, sometimes too strong and cause friction, slowing tooth movement. Wire ties also need to be firmly tightened in place and this can be very uncomfortable at appointment time.
– ALL THE FACTS YOU NEED –
How long will treatment take?
The length of treatment is dependent on the severity of each individual patient’s orthodontic issues. Treatment may vary from anywhere between six months to two years. Dr Tarraf’s average treatment time is between 12-14 months.
Does health insurance cover SPEED™ Braces?
If your insurance policy has orthodontic coverage, SPEED™ Braces will also be covered to the same extent as regular braces. However, as medical benefits differ significantly from policy to policy, you should always check with you health fund.
How often do I have to see my orthodontist?
SPEED™ braces have been designed to work efficiently in your mouth. The ‘Spring Clip’ technology creates a friction free environment and helps maintain a constant and gentle pressure on your teeth. While your teeth are under pressure they keep moving, allowing your orthodontist to spread out your appointments and still improve your smile. Depending on the severity of your correction and the stage of treatment, appointments may be scheduled every 6 – 10 weeks.
What are SPEED™ Braces made of?
SPEED™ Braces are metal braces using a combination of hard and elastic metals to give the best wear and tear, comfort and performance possible. The manufactures’ of SPEED™ Braces are a subsidiary of an Aerospace company and have been fortunate enough to benefit from shared intellectual property for over 30 years.
Will treatment be painful with SPEED™ Braces?
With all orthodontic treatment people experience temporary discomfort. Depending on your sensitivity and your stage of treatment, discomfort can range from very mild to moderate, lasting a few days to a week. While short-term discomfort is normal and is typically described as a feeling of pressure, SPEED™ Braces work to reduce this compared to regular braces.
Will wearing SPEED™ Braces affect my speech?
Like all orthodontic treatments, braces may temporarily affect the speech of some people, and you may have a slight lisp for a short time. As your tongue gets used to moving around your new braces your lisp will disappear. While you may notice small changes, patients that choose SPEED™ Braces typically notice less change as the profile of the SPEED™ Braces is very small, approximately 1/3 smaller than regular braces. If your concerned about your speech changing, even for a short time, then SPEED™ Braces can certainly help to limit this.
How much do SPEED™ Braces cost?
We choose to use the SPEED™ system as our preferred braces; therefore you won’t pay anything extra to have all these benefits. However, as with other medical treatments, our specialists will determine the cost based on your specific needs. Other factors may include your treatment goals, the difficulty of your case, how long you are in treatment and the type of coverage you have for orthodontics with your health fund.
